London and Edinburgh: T.N. Foulis, [1908] Reprint. Soft cover chapbook, 16mo, (measuring 3 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches,) in gray green paper over stiff card, with applied chromolithographed art to cover, the titles in green ink, printed on art paper by Neill and Company, Ltd., Edinburgh, 35 pp. (No publisher's ads.) Chromolithographed illustrations by Englishman Henry Matthew Brock (1875-1970), Cambridge School of Art graduate, illustrator of Charles Dickens and other books, worked as well in advertising. He also contributed illustrations to the magazine "Punch." Here he provides the onlaid cover illustration, titled "He bore a silver dish, on which was an enormous pig's head," which is also used (in full) for the frontispiece The hand-lettered and illustrated title page as well as two other full page illustrations within the text, for a total of five. The text is abstracted from Washington Irving's (1783-1859) serialized " Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." first published in 1820." Crayon enjoys old English hospitality at the Bracebridge Christmas Dinner Table. CONDITION: Very Good Plus. Exterior very clean and sound. Inside, a former owner's name appears on the inside front cover in pen. There are a few single spots of foxing affecting some pages, but generally the pages remain bright and clean. Beginnings of dog-ear corner some text pages are less prominent seen in better light. The illustrations measure about 2 1/4 x 5 inches within the text; larger than some other chapbook editions by this publisher. Scarce title for holiday gifting. Elfick and Harris 164; lack of ads indicates reprint, p. 103.. Soft Cover. Very Good Plus. Illus. by H.M. Brock.
