About This Item
New York: Harper and Brothers , 1899 & 1903 & 1915. First editions of all three titles. Octavos. Illustrated. Publisher's pictorial cloth of various hues. Each volume chemised and the whole housed in a partitioned half green morocco over green cloth slipcase with faux spine bearing gilt lettering. An exceptionally clean and attractive grouping in a very handsome presentation. With the very small and charming bookplate of Betsy S. Swartz. wife of retail mogul Harry H. Schwarts. "Margaret Deland's mother died in childbirth, her father died two days later, and she was raised by her aunt. As a writer of poems, short stories, and novels, she was known for dealing with then-controversial topics, as in her novel John Ward, Preacher, a best-seller about the philosophical clashes between a Calvinist minister and his Episcopalian wife. Many of her stories were set in the fictional town of Old Chester. She was married to Harvard football coach Lorin Fuller Deland, and for several years shared her home with dozens of unwed mothers."
