About This Item

New York: American Association of Masters, Mates and Pilots of the United States, 102-104 Battery Park Building; H.A. Rost Printing & Publishing Co., 1906. Tall 8vo. 167, [1] pp. With numerous tables, diagrams, illustrated ads, photo-illustrated ads, 3 (of 4) large folding U.S. Dept. of Commerce maps in rear printed pocket (minor toning, small closed tears to a couple of the fold creases, 1 map dated 1904). Gray printed softcovers, colour ad for Holzapfel’s Compositions marine paints for iron hulls, and yacht enamels, colour ad for Williams’ Submarine Compound on back cover (minor chipping head & foot of spine, creasing, edgewear, minor tears, pencil annotations and updates on a couple tables to 1917, w/ piece of printed letterhead for the Steamer Commonwealth, Fall River Line laid-in. First edition, thus, of this exceedingly scarce installment in the Nautical Almanac issued annually by the American Association of Masters, Mates and Pilots labor union, three years after they had consolidated all of their subsidiary New York Harbors into one Subordinate lodge, and at the time, other Subordinate Harbor union halls flourished in Albany, NY, New London, CT, Norfolk, VA, San Francisco, CA, Seattle, WA, New Orleans, LA, Galveston, TX, Willamette Harbor in Portland, OR, Honolulu Harbor in Territory of Hawaii, and others. This almanac includes tables for solar and lunar movements, current velocities, eclipses, and astronomical notes for 1906, tide tables in New York, Hudson River courses New York to Kingston, weather flag signals, and even the measured trial course for the New York Yacht Club. In addition to the well-illustrated advertisements for yacht suppliers, shipbuilders, and more, this features an extended section on the many different times the Union had been able to protect their members after maritime accidents, with much of it devoted to the accident in Puget Sound involving the collision of the SS Mainlander with the tug Sea Lion while towing the SS Celtic. The AAMMP Union formed originally in 1887 after repeated incidents of ships masters and pilots being jailed and imprisoned, or charged with manslaughter following maritime accidents, even after heroic efforts. The Union grew to include all deck officers, was active in the 1934 West Coast waterfront strike, and eventually became an affiliate of the International Longshoremen’s Assoc. We were unable to locate any copy of this edition with any maps; No copies are located in Worldcat (3 copies of the 1905 2nd annual reside at NYPL, Yale, Mariners Museum Library, Virginia); See: History of the Association, its remarkable growth and development, The Master, Mate & Pilot, Vol. I, No. 1 (June, 1908), pp. 14-18.
