About This Item
Paris: Chez J-B-Christophe Ballard, 1709. The Roman lyric poet Horace (65-8 BCE) was extremely popular during the Enlightenment and an influence on Milton and Pope among others. Many editions of his works were published; here is an early printing of one of the most famous, by the editor/translator Andre Dacier (1651-1722),"Keeper of the Cabinet Books of the King. Third Edition, reviewed, critiqued and considerably augmented by the Author" [from the French]. A Very Good copy in full leather binding; five raised bands on the spine, with gilt decorations. Clean text; 564 pages; some browning to page-ends, mainly at the end-papers. Heavily rubbed at the margins, with bumped corners, but the book remains sound. The title and decorations on the spine have mostly disappeared, but the textblock is excellent. Asolid copy of an historically important book.. Third Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
