Most dealers list this edition as the 2nd edition of 1873, but that one is bigger, at almost 13x17". The 1873 edition has 719 engravings, the 1883 edition has 674. Third printing of the edition published by Garnier in 1883. Illustrated with more than 600 woodcuts in the text and 60 woodcuts in full page size by Gustave DORÉ, also drawings, including a portrait of Rabelais in the frontispiece of the first volume. One of Gustave Doré's finest creations, very rare and sought-after in large paper. Some soiling to vellum, light foxing, near fine.

Handsomely illustrated volume of the collected works of the 16th century humanist scholar.
