About This Item

Roslyn, New York: Walter J. Black, 1944. This is one of a number of Walter J. Black titles that came into my possession recently. Despite the 1944 copyright date, the book was published later during the 1950s for the Walter J. Black Classics Club. What's remarkable is the New condition, as if the book had been published yesterday and not over half a century ago. I would assume it had probably been boxed and placed in storage since its original purchase. This edition includes the prose translation from the ancient Greek by Samuel Butler, first published in 1900, and was edited by Louise Ropes Loomis. The book includes the original Preface by Butler and an Introduction by Loomis. The book measures 5 1/2 by 7 11/16 inches and includes 306 pages. The book is bound in a woven beige cloth, includes the club initials in a die-stamped gilt set off against a deep red cameo with a gilt border on the front panel, as well as die-stamped gilt titles against a red background and with black and gilt borders on the spine. . Hard Cover. As New/No Dust Jacket as Issued. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Synopsis

The Odyssey (Greek: Ὀδύσσεια, Odýsseia) is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad, the other work traditionally ascribed to Homer. The poem is fundamental to the modern Western canon. Indeed it is the second—the Iliad being the first—extant work of Western literature. It was probably composed near the end of the eighth century BC, somewhere in Ionia, the Greek-speaking coastal region of what is now Turkey. - [Wikipedia][1] [1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odyssey
