About This Item
London: J Dodsley, 1781. Leather. Fine. 11" by 8.5. Not Stated. A finely bound, scarce poem addressed to the pioneering prison reformer, John Howard. The second edition of this poem. With an engraved frontispiece, depicting Howard visiting prisons. This Ode is a celebration of Howard's reform work. John Howard visited several hundred prisons across England, Scotland, Wales and wider Europe. He recounted his findings and wrote detailed accounts of the prisons he visited, in addition to his recommendations on how to improve in the work 'The State of Prisons in England and Wales'. Howard drew a particular focus on hygiene and cleanliness. He was inspired to write this work following his becoming high sheriff of Bedford and was appalled at the condition of the local gaol. Written by William Hayley, a writer best known for his biography of William Cowper. ESTC reference no: T74915. A bright copy of this work, in a very smart binding. In a half calf binding. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Minor offsetting to title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Fine
