New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1873. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Large 8vo. [3], 8-15, [1], 2-534, [2] (pages of publisher's advertisements) pp. Brick-red cloth, beveled-edge boards, stamped in black with a gilt decoration on the front board, spine lettered in gilt. Illustrated with twenty-seven brightly-colored maps and with several other diagrams and figures adorning the text. Elisee Reclus was an important naturalist and geographer, with his key work first published in France as La Terre, Description des Phénomènes de la Vie du Globe. This is the first American edition of his work, containing the second part of Reclus' magnum opus ("Elisee Reclus", Encyclopaedia Brittanica). Former owner's bookplate, tiny dampstain to the bottom textblock and gutter, with a minuscule tear to the free front endpaper.
