About This Item
Lipsiae (Leipzig), Germany: J.C. Hinrichs, 1877. Hardcover. Near Fine. Three-quarter rebinding in dark brown morocco on banker-green antique cloth with laid finish. Spine ruled on gilt. in custom-fashioned slipcase. Light age-tanning to pages. Only several pages of previous owner's neat annotations to pp. 1056 pp. What can be said but that Constantin von Tischendorf was an assiduous and tireless scholar who spent nearly his entire adult professional life seeking out the most authoritative recensions of The New Testament. His lifelong search took him to remote monasteries throughout Europe, Egypt, Sinai and The Levant. His discovery of certain ancient manuscripts predating any known to that day, led to the most authentic critical recension, as well as his extremely rigorous critical standards for assessing the authenticity of any future recensions of the New Testament, are still drawn upon to this day, nearly 150 years after first publication.
