About This Item

Glasguae [Glasgow]: In Aedibus R. Urie, 1750. LARGE PAPER COPY, 8vo, pp. [iv], 572. Contemporary calf, boards ruled in gilt, edges marbled. Some minor spotting and staining, one gathering with a small area of damage to blank margin. Boards marked and scratched, edges worn, sometime smartly rebacked, new spine with raised bands, gilt in compartments and red morocco label. Ownership inscription of Mary Cameron dated 1833 to title-page, engraved bookplate (as ‘Mary Emily Cameron’) to pastedown, catalogue excerpt for this copy pasted below with ink annotation identifying a penciled monogram and 1908 date as the hand of Prof. John Ferguson LLD. The luxuriously margined large paper issue of this Greek New Testament, elegantly printed by Robert Urie, who had taken inspiration from the standard of work established by the Foulis press, though he concentrated on smaller formats like octavos and duodecimos. ‘In 1750 he produced in those formats what may be considered his finest works, a Greek New Testament and an edition of George Buchanan's Psalms’ (ODNB). This copy belonged to a Mary Emily Cameron, possibly the author of ‘The House of the Achendaroch: An Old Maid's Story’ (1878), and later to John Ferguson (1837-1916), the chemist and bibliographer, whose primary collections went to the University of Glasgow.
