UK,12mo p/back,1st edn thus.[Originally and first published,UK,8vo HB +dw/dj by Jonathan Cape,1936.This edn Orange PENGUIN/FICTION main series,of the first 1,000 titles.] VG.No owner inscrptn.Lightly spotted/foxed,publisher's original card,orange+white banded front cover with black+orange letters,darkened orange+white spine/ backstrip with black lettering and publisher's device (b/w penguin),and lightly spotted/foxed,rear cover with author's thumbnail b/w portrait photograph and potted biography.Any discolouration and other imperfections commensurate with book's age and therefore some minimal foxing/spotting present,both internally and externally.Top+ fore-edges darkened; contents tight,clean with page-edge toning and some random accidental top+bottom corners creases to some pages. UK,12mo p/back,1st edn thus,7-214pp [paginated] includes [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,an epigraph,and to the rear, publisher's Penguin/Pelican catalogue separator page and 4pp advert of titles and to inside of rear cover forthcoming 10 titles - mainly from Evelyn Waugh. Working in a publisher's office,the author tried to get her poems published,but was advised go away and write a novel instead.She did, this novel was the result,and when presenting it,to the same publisher, it was rejected as 'too much of a risk'. Taken up and published by Jonathan Cape in 1936,it was immediately and enthusiastically reviewed by leading critics.
