Unexplored Northwest Texas in 1854
[Texas] Parker, W[illiam] B[rown]. Notes Taken During the Expedition Commanded by Capt. R.B. Marcy through Unexplored Texas in the Summer and Fall of 1854. By W.B. Parker, Attached to the Expedition. Philadelphia: Hayes & Zell. 1855. First edition. Original brown ribbed cloth with publishers' logo stamped in blind on covers, title in gilt on spine. [i-v] vi-xii, [9] 10-242 [1] 2-6 ads [4] pp. Cover with wear and bumps. Scattered stains and spots. Very good.
Jenkins, Basic Texas Books 135n. Graff 3195. Howes P91. Plains & Rockies IV:279. Raines, p. 162. Streeter Sale 397. Tate, The Indians of Texas: An Annotated Research Bibliography 2176. Vandale 129. William Brown Parker, a friend of Marcy's, was a New York City businessman and editor who wanted to see the West. Parker writes in an engaging style and provides information not found in other accounts of the important Marcy-Neighbors exploration of the Big Wichita and the headwaters of the Brazos to find sites in Northwest Texas for Native American Reservations. Parker devotes a good deal of his narrative to the tribes encountered and the Native American scouts who assisted the expedition, making it clear that the latter's assistance enabled the expedition. Parker praises the Shawnee and Delaware scouts: "Wherever they are found, they preserve the same character for truth, honesty, and intelligence, and are ever ready, at a moment's warning, to take service, as hunters, guides, or interpreters, and travel hundreds of miles from home." "A well written narrative [which] adds flavor to Marcy's report." – Jenkins. "Especially valuable for the northwest part of Texas." – Graff. "Contains interesting details of personal intercourse with the Indian tribes of the Southern prairies—the Bedouins of the American desert." – Sabin. "A valuable report by one of the civilians who accompanied Capt. Randolph B. Marcy and Robert S. Neighbors across northwestern Texas looking for a site upon which reservations could be created for Penateka Comanches and the small, displaced tribes of Texas." – Tate.-

Description:
Dresden, London, 1903. Comprised of 20 handwritten pages, 13 original sketches and watercolors, 3 musical notations and 3 loose photos of young women. A truly lovely example, bound in recently rebacked quarter cloth over sheep with gilt floral endpapers. All edges brightly gilt. A reminder of how easily women's stories and lives can be lost to history, the present album carries no ownership signature or explanation of what drew its young women contributors together from across major cities in the U.K. and Europe. What the notebook does preserve, however, are the names of a group of women including Adelaide Smollets, Hilda May Sides, Eileen Shea, Winifred and Edith Maude Tweedie, Margaret Monnypenny, Nina Barken, Cissie Daice, Kathleen McArthur, Mabel Weir, Violet Henley, and Dorothy Dudgeon who were drawn together on these pages through their literary and artistic contributions. Beautifully copied quotations from William Shakespeare, Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Adelaide Proctor mingle with tributes…

12mo, pp. 1-142, [22], 143-146, [168]; small typographical ornament to title; a little uniform browning and some light waterstaining to the lower portion of sheets; contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco lettering-pieces; joints cracked but holding, spine end a little chipped, corners worn, some rubbing and abrasions to the surface; purchase note of Francesco Saverio Esperti dated 1813 to rear end-paper and Esperti's ownership inscription on title. Rare first edition of the manifesto of Italian Baroque poetry, appearing in the bitterly satirical 'literary feud' between the leading Italian baroque poet Giambattista Marino and his adversary, Gasparo Murtola. Tokyo: Kazumasa Ogawa, 1892. First Edition. Bound in stiff decorated wraps with stabbed binding using silk ties. Good+. Kazumasa Ogawa. Folio. Pp. [11]. Featuring 27 black and white photos with captions on 11 plates, each plate with a tissue guard. Wear and soiling commensurate with age, with corners rounded and occasional slight, closed tears along fore-edge of two or three plates, each less than an inch. With an errata sheet bound in. This is not a volume in Ogawa's "Illustrations of Japanese Life," a small-format series on various subjects published from 1890s-1910s, but a large folio volume in a series published with uniform covers. The publications provides a fascinating glimpse into Meiji-era Japan in which the traditional Japanese aesthetic is slightly Americanized. In the 1880s Ogawa studied photography in Boston; occasionally his captions here reflect the whimsy popular in the US at that time: "Country Belles in Their Best" or "He is Coming? Let Us Look Pretty!" or "The Policeman and His…

[Imola]: tipografia comunale per Gianbenedetto Filippini, 1811. First edition. A few tiny tears at folds else a fine, untrimmed copy.. Broadside. 49 x 38 cm. Announcing a series of celebrations of the baptism of Napoléon II (1811-1832), known from birth as the King of Rome, son of Napoleon and his second wife, Marie Louise of Austria. Issued in Imola, the original seat of the provisional government of the Cispandane Republic, later merged with the Transpadane Republic, forming the Cisalpine Republic, in turn merged into the new Italian Republic, and then 1805, following Bonaparte's assumption of the title of Emperor of the French, transformed into the Kingdom of Italy, Regno d'Italia, as it is here. After declaring that the people of Imola are second to none in their loyalty to Napoleon, the proclamation notes a series of activities: poems to be read, canon shots and the pealing of bells at dawn, cash prizes to those being married and those who gave birth on the King of Rome's birthday, food for…
