About This Item

London: John Murray, 1872. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London, John Murray, 1872. Octavo, pages 49-61 plus a folding map (with the route added in red). Original blind-stamped blue cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine; cloth a little rubbed at the extremities, with trifling wear to the head and foot of the spine (a little sunned); edges a little foxed and marked, with the top edge dust-stained; inner hinges and chips to the front flyleaf neatly consolidated; occasional light foxing; trifling signs of handling; a very good copy. Burton was Consul to Damascus from 1869 to 1872. Other articles (each containing a large folding map with added colour) include BURTON, Richard Francis and Charles F. Tyrhwitt DRAKE: Notes of a Reconnaissance of the Anti-Libanus (pages 408-425); FORREST, Alexander: Account of an Expedition to explore South-Western Australia eastward of the Settled Districts and beyond Hampton Plains (pages 388-390); ELTON, Captain Frederick: Journal of an Exploration of the Limpopo River (pages 1-49); and GRANT, Lieutenant-Colonel J.A.: Summary of Observations on the Geography, Climate, and Natural History of the Lake Region of Equatorial Africa, made by the Speke and Grant Expedition, 1860-63 (pages 243-342, no map issued with this article). We could go on; almost every one of the 21 articles is worthy of individual mention.
