London: Harvill, 2000. First edition, first printings published by Harvill in 2000. Issued in two volumes similar to the original Japanese first edition. This title is one of the author's most celebrated works, rapidly achieving cult status in Japan. Jay Rubin's translation is the authorized version for publication outside of Japan, published 13 years after the original Japanese edition. Norwegian Wood is a nostalgic, elegiac coming-of-age romance, dealing sensitively with issues of love, loss, and mental illness. Original red and green wrappers, lettered in black and gold. Housed in the original bronze solander box with black titles, which are slightly rubbed and marked in places. Both near fine with a little wear to the top of the volume one's page edge. Rare in the original box.
Synopsis
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami explores loss and sexuality as told from a first-person perspective in the late 1960s. During this time Japanese students were protesting against the established order, which serves as a basis for the events in the novel. The original Japanese title, Noruwei no Mori is the standard Japanese translation of a Beatles song “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)”, which is often referenced in the story and a favorite song of the character Naoko. Murikamis writing has received numerous awards with notable works being The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle , Kafka on the Shore , and 1Q84 . A film adaptation of Norwegian Wood was released in 2010. Translated from the Japanese by Jay Rubin.
