John Philippart was a 19th-century British author known for his many works on war and the British military. One such work was his study into the various campaigns and battles of the War of 1812. "Northern Campaigns" focused primarily on the Napoleonic engagements near Moscow and St. Petersburg and the position of the Russian armies in Poland and Russia.
This valuable 1813 two-volume first edition is complete with the original folding maps, maps that are often lacking from this set.

o Bookplate – Clement Shorter
Clement King Shorter (1857–1926) was a British journalist and literary critic. After editing the Illustrated London News, Shorter founded and edited Sketch, The Sphere, and Tatler. While best remembered for writing numerous works on the Bronte sisters, including editing Elizabeth Gaskell's The Life of Charlotte Brontë in 1899, Shorter also wrote about Napoleon, and likely used these tomes in his research.
