With a publisher's presentation copy blind stamp to the head of the title page.Thomas Whiffen was a British army officer and explorer.In this volume is his account of his travels through Brazil and Colombia between 1908 and 1909, specifically through the Putumayo region between the Issa and Apaporis. His study focuses on the indigenous cultures of that area, primarily the Boro and Witoto cultures. He describes their way of life including their homes, agriculture, cooking, ceremonies, manufacture of weapons, cultural customs and manner of dress; and also describes the use of native plants to cure and heal. The practice of cannibalism is addressed in this book.With a library bookplate to the front pastedown, library number to spine tail, and stamp to front free endpaper.Illustrated with five maps, three of which are folding, and fifty-four photographic plates. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with significant rubbing to rear joint. Hinges strained, with front hinge a touch tender, and rear hinge firmly held. Bookplate to front pastedown, stamp to front free endpaper. Internally, binding lightly strained.
