About This Item
London: Constable and Company, 1915. First edition. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. A signed first edition copy of Thomas Whiffen's account of his travels among tribes in the North-West Amazon. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding. A slip of paper containing the signature of the author has been pasted to the front paste down. 46 photographic plates, 2 full page maps and 3 folding maps. Lacking plates ix, xxxviii, xxxix, xl, xlv, li, liii and liv. Thomas Whiffen was a British army officer and explorer. In this volume is his account of his travels through Brazil and Colombia between 1908 and 1909, specifically through the Putumayo region between the Issa (or Ica) and Apaporis. This study focuses on the indigenous cultures of that area, primarily the Boro and Witoto cultures. He describes their way of life including their homes, agriculture, cooking, ceremonies, manufacture of weapons, cultural customs and manner of dress; and also describes the use of native plants to cure and heal. The practice of cannibalism is addressed in this book. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, with light wear to the extremities. Frontispiece is detaching but otherwise the book is firmly bound. The odd spot throughout and offsetting to the first few pages and the rear free end paper; however, pages are generally clean. Lacking 8 plates. The footnote of page 89 has been cut out. Good
