Description:
[New York: n.p., 1983-1987]. Contents uniformly in near fine to fine condition.. Collection of 120 flyers and posters from New York's hottest and most inventive nightclub, Area, during the mid-1980s. Although it was a disco, Area was a purely visual, happenings-based venue, where New York's art, music, design, fashion, and literary worlds collided; Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, or Jean-Michel Basquiat might be brushing up against Michael Forbes, David Byrne, or Georgio Armani, and Stephen Saban would be there to remind them what happened afterwards in his Details magazine column. Unlike other downtown clubs that focused on music or dancing, Area was driven by art and the scene that it engendered, through its theme nights, elaborate installations, and inventive flyers that seemed to embody Warhol's concept of business art. This archive includes Area's famously unconventional invitations, posters, articles, booklets, and other ephemera from the nightclub's short-lived, yet significant, four-year history.… Read More

Australia: Opifex, 2020. Paperback. 6 × 9 inches. Paperback. 144 pages. "Chicago Modernism and the Ludlow Typograph is copiously illustrated... Gehl's writing is lucid and jargon-free. His fluent and engaging manner makes the book a pleasure to read." - Paul Shaw, Journal of Design History, Vol. XX No. XX "...there is not a misplaced phrase here and [Gehl's] research is excellent... Gehl's masterful distillation is particularly welcome. It is also both readable and enjoyable." - Steven Heller, Parenthesis 42 "At the core of Gehl's fascinating account of a most improbable yet successful typographic partnership is America's tentative steps toward Modernism at a time when revivalism remained prevalent and the modern spirit was considered to be culturally of dubious intent. Philadelphia: Merrihew & Thompson, printers, 1850. Paperback. Very Good. 32 p.; 23 cm. Green wrappers with black wrapper title. The Union Benevolent Association was established in 1831 to provide assistance to Philadelphia residents by lending stoves to help heat their homes during a harsh winter, along with wood and coal. The intention was to help the "worthy poor" without regard for religion or race. The activities of the organization have evolved since 1831; today it provides grants to projects to fight poverty. This report contains a list of people who contributed to the Union Benevolent Association for the previous year with the amount given, as well as detailed data about the people with whom the association had worked. The (male) officers of the Association are listed; none of the members of the Ladies' Board of Managers are named, although the majority of the report is theirs. Scarce. Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")

Adams was born to Nathaniel Dickinson Adams and Harriet (Hastings) Adams in Shutesbury, Massachusetts. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read More
