About This Item
"Eccentricity was a favorite whim of the Beaus of the Regency- I had nearly laid prose, but I think it was something more than that- and eccentrics were to be found taking a prominent place in Society when the nineteenth century was well on its way. When they took in sport as they generally did, they were sportsman of the best and the hunting field and the race course owes many a stirring anecdote to men like the Earls of Barrymore and their contemporaries and immediate successors. A notable man in his day was Mr. Fulwar Craven of Chilton. He was a good all round sportsmen and took a prominent position in the sports of his time. A soldier by profession he had a commission in the First Royals and was a popular man amongst the leading sportsmen of his day. He was a fine shot but he did not carry game, preserving to the excess which was coming into fashion in the early part of the nineteenth century. He hunted and at one time he dept a pack of harriers but history has not much to say of his hounds and his hunting. It is probable that he hunted because everyone else in his set did. His estate at Chilton was famous for its trout streams and under such circumstances it goes without saying that he was a skillful fisherman." an excerpt.
