About This Item
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Presumed presentation copy with the publisher's promotional material and a TLS from Furst. Near Fine in an about Fine jacket, unclipped ($19.95), lightly bumped at the top edge. Quarter black cloth with beige paper on the boards. Firmly bound with an ever-so-slight forward lean, clean internally. Included with the book are Houghton Mifflin's broadsides about Furst and Night Soldiers as well as eleven leaves of research used in writing the book. Furst's TLS and its related unsigned letter instruct Ross Lavroff to research eleven Russian or Bulgarian words, such as "Bulgarian - 'Swine-snout' or another name that would make somebody very angry. (Roman letters)." The remaining leaves are correspondences addressing Furst's linguistic requests. A truly unique copy that sheds insight on Furst's writing practices and the effort required to produce one of his Night Soldiers novels.
