About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1953. Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. First edition. Modest chipping at the crown, thus very good in slightly spine-toned, else near fine printed dust jacket. One of 1000 copies for presentation sent by the publisher and Signed by the author. According to a publisher's letter we've seen referenced, some copies of this Presentation issue were issued in unprinted glassine jackets, and some in printed dust jackets. Basis for the memorable film directed by Charles Laughton and featuring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, Lillian Gish, and magnificent camera work by Stanley Cortez. The script is credited to James Agee, who died a few months after the film was released, but reportedly Laughton, dissatisfied with Agee's work, rewrote it himself from scratch. Though now considered a classic, upon release the unusual and unique film was a critical and financial failure, and Laughton never directed again.
