About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1954. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good +. 273pp. Octavo [21 cm] 1/4 black cloth over blue boards. The foot of the spine is just a trifle bumped. In the jacket designed by Susan Foster, with minor rubbing to the extremities and mild toning to the rear panel. The author's first novel.
A first edition of this Southern gothic horror novel and the inspiration for Charles Laughton's expressionist horror classic starring Robert Mitchum.
From the publisher-
"... strange and dreadful as a shantyboat ballad- it is the story of people at that moment in their lives when they are small and no one understands them when no one knows that the shadow at the nursery windows is really a tiger and not the shadows of leaves beneath the moon: that the creak of sleeping rooms is the step of Doom itself, and that every midnight beneath a child's counterpane is the night of the hunter.
