Chatto and Windus, 1968. First edition, first printing. 8vo. 350pp. Brown boards with gilt lettering to spine. Light brown topedge as issued. Pictorial dustwrapper complete with original Book Society wraparound band. A fine copy with no inscriptions. Clean textblock edges with no marks. The near fine/dustwrapper has light wear and a short closed tear at foot of spine with associated small piece of tape strengthening to verso [not visible on exterior]. Original price of 30snet on front flap. None of the usual tanning to spine. Rare with wraparound band. The novel combines elements of thriller and romantic comedy genres & was short listed for the 1969 Booker Prize.
Synopsis
IRIS MURDOCH was born in Dublin in 1919 of Anglo-Irish parents. She went to Badminton School, Bristol, and read classics at Somerville College, Oxford. In 1948 she returned to Oxford where she became a fellow of St. Anne's college. Awarded the CBE in 1976, Iris Murdoch was made a DBE in the 1987 New Year's Honours List. She died in 1999.
