Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for 'History of the English-Speaking Peoples'. This is volume two of that set.
In "The New World" Churchill describes the discovery and colonization of the Americas by European powers, particularly England. Churchill outlines the explorations and settlements of various European nations, including Spain, Portugal, France, and the Netherlands, but focuses primarily on England's role in the New World.
Churchill describes how England's first attempt at colonization in the New World, the Roanoke Colony, ultimately failed, but how subsequent efforts in Virginia and Massachusetts proved successful. He discusses the challenges faced by early settlers, including conflict with Native American tribes and the harshness of the environment, as well as the ways in which English culture and institutions were transplanted and adapted in the New World.
Churchill also examines the economic, political, and social impact of the New World on England and the rest of Europe, including the development of transatlantic trade and the rise of colonial empires. He notes the conflicts that arose between European powers over control of the New World and the ways in which these conflicts ultimately led to the American Revolution and the birth of the United States.
Overall, Churchill's description of the New World emphasizes the important role played by England in the colonization and development of the Americas, and the ways in which this shaped both English and American history.
