About This Item
Philadelphia: Key and Biddle, 1836. viii, 174 pp. First edition. Octavo. Leather binding. Gilt lettering and lines of the spine. Edges trimmed. This book has heavy foxing and staining through out, however it is tight and in a very readable condition. Illustrated with many tables, charts, and plates. One fold out plate at the title page. A former owner's bookplate has been removed from the front paste down. The author of this book was Matthew Maury, a renowned U.S. Navy officer. He was an accomplished navigator and scientist. He was also fervently committed to White Supremacy, joining the Confederacy to defend the Confederate coast line during the American Civil War. Among other things, he experimented with electrically detonated torpedoes (the Confederate ships using this deadly invention sank fifty five Union ships). Written years before his participation in the Civil War, this American title has detailed chapters on algebra, geometry, logarithms, trigonometry, spherics and nautical astronomy. It looks to be a scarce title; at the time of cataloguing there were no other editions of this vintage available online.

This book belonged to Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy. David was a prominent hydrographic specialist who served with the Hakluyt Society and the Society for Nautical Research. David's bookplate is on the front free end paper. 1836
