About This Item
New York: Council on Religion and International Affairs, 1976. Hardcover. Very Good. A collection of 25 books and pamphlets concerning the nuclear debate, peace studies and the Christian response. 'The New Nuclear Debate' by J Bryan Hehir and 'War and Moral Discourse' by Ralph H Potter are both first editions inscribed by the authors to British Catholic theologian Walter Stein. The pamphlets include 'The Nuclear Dilemma' by Leonard Cheshire, 'Britain without the Bomb' by John Rex, and two titles by Mgr McReavy. These books come from the collection of Walter Stein, a British writer, literary critic and Catholic moral philosopher. Born in 1922, Stein was a Jewish refugee from pre-war Austria, educated by the Quakers in York and eventually a Catholic convert who worked in the Department of Extramural Studies at Leeds University. Stein was passionately committed to the cause of unilateral disarmament which preoccupied many Catholics in the 1960s and '70s and his underlinings and commentary run through the collection. Very Good 1976
