About This Item

New York, NY: Time Life Books, 1966. First Edition, First Thus . Soft Cover/Flexible Cloth. Very Good/None as Issued. Text/BRAND NEW & Bright. Softcover/VG; strong & sound with light edge & surface rubs. Classic socio-political treatise. First published 1945 at WorldWar II's end; this is a Time Reading Program special Edition of 1966. Study of the English wartime Fascist traitors by British author, literary critic and journalist Rebecca West, psuedonym of Dame Cicely Isabel Fairfield (1892 - 1983), who covered the Nurenberg trials. This volume, in specific, is an analysis of the trial of the British Fascist William Joyce and others. 3 chapters: I, The Revolutionary; II, The New Phase; and III, The Decline & Fall of Treason, followed by Conclusion. In contrast to the traitor, West defines the spay as an enemy soldier behind our lines, such as the Soviet espionage rings in Great Britain. Arguing against notions that there are "no secrets" in science, West shows, in detail, why in an age of modern scientific and technological advances, treasonal betrayal wroughts consequences far beyond that in the days of conventional warfare --- technology of weapons does now carry moral and ethical burdens. A historical work with contemporary implications.
