About This Item

Chester, England: John Seacome, Bookseller. Presumed First Edition . Buckram. Very Good. 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. A fold-out map in booklet form, the booklet measuring about 4.25 x 4.25 inches. Undated but circa 1830. Presumed first edition but may be a later printing. The publisher, John Seacome, Bookseller, Chester, Engalnd, was active from approximately 1828 to 1836. Published by him in association with R. Groombridge, London. Olive drab buckram hardboards, with a handsome if age-yellowed title label to the front board, the pasted-on label with black lettering and ornament. Presumed contemporary binding but may be later. The map is a 12-section folded sheet, oblong, approximately 13 x 16 inches, backed onto stiff muslin or similar. Consists of a color map of the northern half of Wales. Appears to be hand-colored. Chief colors are: pale yellow, pale red, and pale green on a background of eggshell-color, and the map text is in black. Map engraved by J. and A. Walker. The folds of the map fall into place very cleanly when folding the map back up. A charming and useful feature of this booklet, obviously designed to be pocket-sized for the convenience of the traveler, is a printed table, on the reverse of the front board, of distances from town to town in north Wales. "The names of the respective Towns are on the top and side, and the Square where both meet gives the distance." The map is exceptionally clean, with no markings, tears or other demerits noted, apart from very light and uniform age-fading. The map has a dimension of approximately 13.5 x 10.75 inches. Overall the condition of this piece of ephemera is Very Good. Scarce in any condition.

About Marc Sena Carrel

I deal principally in rare and fine books. I also sell antique prints, including Japanese ukiyo-e. I have eclectic and wide-ranging interests and my collection generally emphasizes art titles. Areas of book specialization include: Art, Architecture, Design, Antiques, Antiquities, Small Press/Fine Press. As for prints, I am chiefly interested in ukiyo-e, ornithologicals, iconography and churches. I have a small but choice selection of books and prints available for the discriminating collector/buyer. My goal is to establish and maintain a stock in trade of a few thousand fine books and a few hundred noteworthy prints.
