Dent & Co. 1909. sm4to., 25cm, viii,270p., title-page printed in black and red, over 400 text figures, notes, appendix, index, publishers' blue/grey cloth, gilt decoration upper board, gilt spine titles & decorations, inserted toned newspaper column on half-title, light fading to spine very good to fine (ds1). ~ A unique study of watermarks in mediaeval printing illustrated with reproductions of hundreds of emblems. From the time of the Middle Ages paper makers had a custom of branding almost every sheet of their paper with certain peculiar designs or emblems. This was the first attempt to classify these emblems.
