About This Item
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1923 With woodcuts by J. J. Lankes. First edition, third printing. Inscribed by Frost on front free endpaper: "Robert Frost / Amherst 1925." Publisher's green cloth-backed black paper-covered boards, with gilt label to front board, spine lettered in gilt, and brown patterned endpapers; lacking original dust jacket. Good or better, with light wear to spine ends, light rubbing to spine and label on front board, a couple of light ink marks to front board, corners worn to boards, "Wildcliff Junior College" bookplate to front pastedown, and a tiny bit of dampstaining along top edges of front flyleaf and rear free endpaper. Overall, a sturdy signed copy. New Hampshire, Frost's fourth collection of poetry, is a mix of long narrative poems and short poems. The book is split into three sections: "New Hampshire," "Notes," and "Grace Notes." "New Hampshire" is a fourteen-page laudatory poem about the rural state ("The only fault I find with old New Hampshire / Is that her mountains aren't quite high enough"). "Notes'' includes additional longer narrative poems, like "A Star in a Stone-boat," "The Census-taker," and "Two Witches." Lastly, "Grace Notes" contains some of Frost's most enduring short poems, like "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," "Fire and Ice," "Nothing Gold Can Stay," "Fragmentary Blue," and "The Need of Being Versed in Country Things." Interestingly, the poem "Fire and Ice" was the inspiration behind the title of George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones series, "A Song of Ice and Fire." One of Frost's classic collections, New Hampshire earned Frost the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1924. . Signed by Author. Hard Cover. Good.
