About This Item
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1946. Hardcover. viii, 441p., illustrated with numerous vignette sketches, no fullpage plates, but the intimate prose well takes care of the reader; also, there is a doublespread line map impressed on front endsheets. Hardbound in 8.5x5.5 inch black cloth boards lettered white, very good condition albeit lacking the dust jacket. Perfectly sound and clean, and unmarked except for a small scrawled presentation in a corner of the map. From p.1: "Though many of the characters in this book are headhunters past or present and the action is hunting heads, there is little blood beyond these first few pages. Our own manhunt in New Guinea was for native models whose heads we wanted to paint in portraits.
