New Haven, Conn.: L. H.Young, 1833 Hard cover, 12mo, 106pp + 2 pp.ads. Half-leather with original marbled paper-covered boards. Wonderfully illustrated history of the early settlement of America by the pilgrims, with some accounts of the traditions of the Native Americans. Some notable New England religious founders, The Death of King Philip, Whitefield and the Religious Revival, Departure of thee Missionaries to the Sandwich Islands, and more. Author John Warner Barber ( 1798-1885) was an itinerant artist who travelled around his native Connecticut and Massachusetts and New Jersey environs sketching scenes, later engraving them on boxwood. This was one of his earlier titles, and one of America's first "local histories." Condition: Fair. Water damage causing some staining or mold throughout, with some old ghosts of tape repairs. Some pages with illustrations are loose from the binding. Complete with all 19 woodblock carved engravings done by the Author. Covers very worn, with losses to the marbled paper, extensive on bottom board. Scarce. Sabin 52743. Shaw and Shoemaker 17652.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair.
