It maps out the literary history of what was a women's tradition and school and describes the evolution of that tradition of literary realism in the New England local colorists of the 19th century. Donovan discusses the works of Stowe and Jewett as well as Rose Terry Cooke, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, and Mary Freeman and their works in detail and shows how they rejected romantic stereotypes and depicted strong women in realistic local settings.Bound in blue-green cloth w/ black titles on spine, very clean and unmarked with slight rubbing to corners and spine edges.
