London Bridge: J. Hodges (et al), 1745. Fourth edition, [1754]. Small 12mo, pp (4), xlvi, 232, a little age-toning and a few blemishes, the endpapers and the first and last few pages have some browning around the margins, overall however the contents are sound and tight, contenporary full calf a little worn, rubbed at the corners, the spine dull, some cracking at the joints but all firm. [Child [c. 1630/31 - 1699) was an English merchant and politician. He was an economist proponent of mercantilism and governor of the East India Company. He purchased Wanstead Manor in Essex in 1673 from the executors of Sir Robert Brooke and spent much money on laying out the grounds of the manor house, Wanstead Hall. John Evelyn described him as "sordidly avaricious" !! Child's advocacy, both by speech and by pen, of the East India Company's claims to political power, as well as to its right of restricting competition to its trade, brought him to the notice of the shareholders. He was appointed a Director in 1677, rising to Deputy-Governor and finally became Governor of the East India Company in 1681. In this latter capacity he directed the Company's policy as if it were his own private business. He was a moderate in those days of the mercantile system, and has sometimes been regarded as a sort of pioneer in the development of the free-trade doctrines of the 18th century. Though Child considered himself a proponent of the competitive market, he simultaneously argued for a government-controlled interest rate and restricted trade among the colonies which would benefit England.]. Fourth edition. Full Leather. Good.

Description:
The book is in excellent condition. The pages are white, of high quality, and the book smells pleasant. One page has a small easily overlooked punch-rip. Binding is good. Hardcover is green with black trim and gold embossed author and title only on the spine. The Dust Jacket is ripped and taped and has some insect damage and torn corners. What makes this second 1933 edition book especially interesting, is that it is signed, small and unpretentious, in fine black ink by the author. The book is written in Czechoslovakian. The story is a Czechoslovakian version of "Robinhood" of sorts, a blend of fact and magical fiction of the mythical or legendary Nikola Suhaj, (depending on who you believe). The story takes place in Ruthenia, mostly after, but also during the First World War. This region is forgotten, and people here are very poor and their only livelihood is the forests, where they say God lives, witches cast spells, and there are enchanted places where even the wildlife won't go. The themes of…

London: J. Hodges, W. Meadows [& 4 others],, [1740?]. First published in 1690 as A Discourse about Trade by Sir Josiah Child (c. 1631 - 1699), economic writer and merchant. "In 1690 he published under his own name the comprehensive Discourse about Trade, which included his Proposals for the Relief and Employment of the Poor, which had appeared earlier as an undated pamphlet. This work was reprinted in 1693 under the title A New Discourse on Trade to coincide with a new attempt in parliament to reduce the legal maximum rate of interest... Child acquired considerable fame as an economic writer in his own day and was both widely read and frequently quoted. His works were reprinted continuously during the eighteenth century and published in French in 1754. He exerted influence because of his fluent and persuasive pen, his debating skills, and his obvious success in and experience of business" (ODNB).
