About This Item

Philadelphia: E. H. Butler & Co, 1851 & 1848. Reprint. Hardcover. Very Good. 11.25" x 9" x 3" (respectively). COMPLETE, TWO VOLUME SET. Published in 1851 and 1848. Bound in full, sheepskin leather. Covers are plain. Hubbed spines bear two black leather labels lettered in gilt. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers in gray, green, black, brown, red and blue. Continuously paginated across both volumes. Triple columned with very small print.

VOLUME I: A to K. Published in 1851. 1184 pp.
VOLUME II: K to Z. Published in 1848. Pages 1185 through 2223.

EXCERPT FROM THE FRONT "ADVERTISEMENT": "Richardson's English Dictionary was originally as a part of the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana. Like most of the articles contributed to that highly scientific work, its immediate publication in a separate form was allied for both in England and America. In offering a new edition of this work to the public, it is hardly deemed necessary to remark upon its value. Its character as a work of standard authority in English Philology is so well established, that few scholars or professional men would deem their libraries complete without it. Whatever other Dictionaries a gentleman may have, he needs that of Richardson for its ample chronological quotations from the older authors. These quotations give anyone who will consult them, the key by which he may learn for himself the true meaning and history of words, without relying implicitly upon the dictum of a Lexicographer."

CONDITION: Overall VG. Cover is rubbed with some soiling and shows rub-through wear/stripping of some leather. Inner hinges have cracked, yet boards are still firmly affixed and binding is sound. Pagination appears complete. Unmarked except for a number written in ink on the title page of Volume I. Label affixed from The Hale Reference Library on the front pastedown. A nice set.

At over 13 lbs., due to the size and weight of this set, an additional shipping charge will apply.
