New York: American Museum of Natural History, 1932 First Edition. l,678 pp. Quarto. Original orange cloth with black decoration on the front board and spine. Corners and edges of the spine with very mild wear. Slight dust soiled. Two bookplates on the front pastedown and endpaper. Coloured frontispiece. 128 black and white plates, many folding. Three folding maps at the rear. Overall an attractive copy with only minor wear. This is the first volume of Andrews lavish production of his Central Asiatic Expedition in Mongolia and China. There numerous chapters by famous naturalist's including Walter Granger, Clifford Pope and Nels C. Nelson. Andrews,was the leader of the expedition and it is thought he was subsequently the model for the character of "Indiana Jones". Look at the hat they both wore! This is a special copy as it is inscribed on the front endpaper "To Dr. Dennett with many thanks for the assistance given to me and the members of our expedition the high seas. Roy Chapman Andrews April 5, 1934 New York. Dr. Dennett I assume was the father of Daniel Clement Dennett, and bears his bookplate. The other book plate is of Steve Fossett, the great balloonist and pioneer aerial explorer who perished in the desert after an plane crash. A great copy with tons of history! 1932
