About This Item

New York, London: Alfred A. Knopf, January 1927. First Edition. Cloth . Very Good/No Jacket. First trade edition. Seven & 3/4-inches x Ten & 1/4-inches. Quarto. Black cloth covered boards with gold lettering on spine & front panel. Some light grey staining to boards especially along bottom edge of front. Lettering along spine is faded and virtually illlegible; spine edge cloth has turned brown with age. Yet textblock black topstain is hardly faded at all. Fore-edge is darkened with foxing. Yellow spotting to front pastedown and free end page. Likewise rear endpages. Also there is some glue residue and probable bookplate removal scar on rear free end page. More foxing and spotting on pages within textblock, though these diminish deeper within book. There are 57 excellent color (8) & black & white illustrated plates in this wonderful book. One is frontispiece, titled 'Negro Women'. The rest 56 numbered, titled plates, divided into 4 chapter-sections: Varia, The Theatre, In the Cabarets, and Three Cuban Women. Within the Varia chapter (between #19 & #29) there is one sub-section, Ten Heads. Here numbers oddly switch from Arabic numerals to Roman Numbers as if to show doubters that there are indeed 10 (or V) heads. One of these heads is featured on the original dustjacket. Unfortunately, the jacket is missing from this copy.
