About This Item

Very Good. Collotype 20 x 16 inches. Titled and copyrighted in the negative. Photo was likely taken circa 1915. This collotype is somewhat dark or underexposed and is quite beautiful. Collotype has brittle edges with minor chipping along the top and bottom right corners, else very good. The Library of Congress holds the same photographic print and is dated to around 1915. The photo print depicts a Navajo man, seated on the floor by a fire, shaping silver. William Jefferson Carpenter (1861-1925) was active as a photographer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries focusing on landscape and mining scenes and Native American life. Mautz states that he was active in Fort Lewis, CO circa 1885, Telluride and Silverton, CO in 1889, Philipsburg, MT in 1890 and Rossland, BC circa 1897 (Mautz). .
