About This Item

New York: Alfred A Knopf, 1997. In 'Nature of Blood', Phillips gives us an eloquent, most powerful and provocative novel; a complex and moving tale about seemingly disparate lives that are nonetheless connected across the boundries of societies and centuries by circumstance, spirit and blood..... This West-Indian-born author has received the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. His highly acclaimed novel 'Crossing The River' was short-listed for the 1994 Booker Prize. He has established himself as a uniquely gifted writer. An extremely bright book in a price-intact illustrated dust jacket (from the painting: Bridge of Sighs by William Etty). Book carries a remainder mark to top edge.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine.

Synopsis

A novel about personal crisis and momentous social conflict, Caryl Phillips sixth novel tells the inextricably linked stories of a young Jewish woman growing up in mid-twentieth-century Germany, and an African general hired by the Doge to command his armies in sixteenth-century Venice. At the heart of these stories is Europe's age-old obsession with race, with similarity and difference, with blood. This is a novel about how we define ourselves and consequently, it is about the most dangerous and nightmarish aspects of our identity.
