Description:
London: John Murray, 1850. New edition. Small square octavo, pp xvi, 144, (4). + publisher's catalogue 8 pages, with 12 lithographed plates, delicately hand-coloured, all edges gilt, very clean internally, a contemporary signature on the front endpaper [Charles H. Hingeston, 1852], original blind-stamped cloth, gilt lettering on upper cover, slightly faded, a little worn at the corners, very neatly re-backed with a modern cloth spine, unlettered. Still a very pleasing copy of a work which is difficult to find in good condition. [In many ways a ground-breaking work, as was much of Mantell's opus. It alerted the Victorians to an aspect of natural history which had previously largely escaped them, and was a remarkable precursor to the germ theory.]. Cloth. Very Good.

London: Printed for Private Circulation, 1855. Illustrated with line drawings, a folding coloured map, a folding map printed in blue, pp xx, 507, all edges gilt, a little occasional foxing, otherwise clean internally, contemporary half morocco, marbled sides, raised bands, only very slight signs of wear. The publication was authorised by Queen Victoria who had purchased the manuscript after the author's death. The printing was very limited, probably under 150 copies. There are extensive lists of plants and animals, extending to eighty pages. [A unique copy, extra illustrated with 25 original topographical photographs, probably by the original owner - Charles F.S. Chambers - whose armorial bookplate appears on the front endpaper. Though the images are small, (mainly c. 60mm x 65mm), they have great charm and are largely in good condition with only slight fading. They are all of local interest - Falls of Garrvalt, Birch Wood near Balmoral, Abergoldie Castle etc. They are all neatly indexed in pencil on the contents pages. The second bookplate is of Robert Washington Oates, whose original collection was gifted to the Gilbert White Museum.]. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good.

A good working copy of a very scarce title. [John Ray FRS, 1627 - 1705, was an English naturalist widely regarded as one of the earliest of the English parson-naturalists. His classification of plants in his Historia Plantarum, was an important step towards modern taxonomy. Ray rejected the system of dichotomous division by which species were…
