These volumes have a modern binding with leather spines and marbled boards, new endpapers. All volumes lack the half-title pages, volumes I and II also lack the title pages. Volume I lacks page 471 (last page) with loss of a few lines and all pages up to xviii. Contents pages xix-xxvii have been bound at the back of the volume. One plate in volume III bound in volume II, page 120 by mistake. All plates and woodcuts present. Frontispiece vol I frayed on edges, slight worm holing first few pages of volume III. Charles Masson, alias James Lewis was arguably the Westerner with the best knowledge of Afghanistan in the 1830s. The best account of the turbulent years before the Afghan wars of the 1850s.
