A very good copy with the bookplate of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Commandery of the State of Illinois on front pastedown, shelf sticker on foot of backstrip, boards rubbed with some loss at one corner, short contemporary notation on rear pastedown.. 75 pp.; 68 pp. Illus. with 16 b/w drawings on 2 folding plates. 8vo. Wittich's original work on fortification and defense with Duparcq's French translation. Each version contains a copy of the single plate [51x45 cm (1840) and 60x48 cm (1847)]. Wittich was a Prussian Artillery Major. Deparcq was Chef de Bataillon of Engineers in the French Army, Professor of the Military Art in the Imperial School of St. Cyr, and considered one of the best military writers of his day. Partly written in response to an anonymous pamphlet entitled Facts Illustrative Of The Treatment Of Napoleon Bonaparte which had attempted to vindicate the actions of Governor Lowe in relation to allegations against him made by OMeara. OMeara had refused to pass information to Lowe regarding Napoleon, whom he attended as physician at St. Helena. Lowe insisted that OMeara be dismissed from his post, and this was effected when independent evidence of OMearas intrigues reached Lord Bathurst. When OMeara sent a letter to the Admiralty instinuating that Napoleons life was not safe in Lowes hands, his name was stricken from the list of naval surgeons..

There were hundreds of prostitutes along with sailors wives (and children) were also inside the closed quarters with each bunk or hammock measuring 24" sexual activity began to take place. The Lords describe the various encounters in the narrow hammocks, the stench, the drunkeness, and the crude blasphemies and mockeries of the Lord's Prayer and Apostle's Creed. Of course, the problem of venereal disease was overwhelming and many of the ship's surgeons resigned if they had any other opportunity to avoid service on these ships.
