About This Item
12 mo, publisher cloth backed boards, illustrated with wood engravings, some in color (probably by early owner) 166 pp. Boards are worn and soiled with some chipping at edges, and some fading to title wording. Early owner signatures to preliminaries. Also, some light foxing and a few chips to edges of a couple of pages, but not affecting text The present work appears to be a reworking of a journal published by Jewitt in Boston in 1807. At least two editions were published of this book in 1815, one in Connecticut and the present volume, which was published in New York. Despite the fact that this work was published in numerous editions, Alsop felt he didn't really do Jewitt any real good, because he seemed to be reduced to a vagabond like existence marching around the country hawking his book (Field). According to Streeter Jewitt was the first white man to live with the Indians in Nootka Sound, and the work presents an excellent account of his adventures. Considered a very accurate portrayal of the tribes in this area, with much detailed information about their daily lives. Work contains a list of some words in the Nootkian language.
