The National Theatre in Prague has an extraordinary position in Czech cultural history. This resulted from the tradition of Czech theater, which since the mid-18th century became the major tool of national awakening. It also rose to this prominence because it was build from voluntary collections as a symbol of Czech national revival with a status comparable to other culturally advanced nations of the world. The work of design and construction brought together leading architects, painters and sculptors. Unfortunately a fire destroyed their work shortly after completion but within a short time the necessary money to repair the structure was raised. Within two years, the Golden Chapel of the Vltava River shone even more beautifully and a richly in form than it had before. For nearly a hundred years it has functioned as the premier Czech artistic center for the performing arts attracting audiences as aspiring actors and singers from all over Bohemia and Moravia. Beginning in 1978, extensive restoration work has been underway, which was scheduled to be completed in five years. The National Theatre is not just a historic building. It is also an institution which includes yet another building: the Tyl Theatre, the former Estates Theater of Count F. A. Nostic built between 1781 and 1783, where Mozart's opera Don Giovanni was premiered. When Czechoslovakia was established as an independent state, this building was acquired primarily for the production of Czechoslovakian dramatic works. After World War II Smetana Theatre was added to the National Theater institution and in 1958 the Laterna Magica was added for the presentation of experimental theater. The early chapters in this book deal with the history of construction of all these theaters, their architecture and their artistic decoration. Later chapters of the book are devoted to opera, drama, ballet and the Laterna Magica. Leading theater theorists introduce the reader to the development of the productions from beginning of the theater's existence with particular emphasis on periods when the organization's work involved significant creative personalities: Kovarovic, Ostrcil, Talich in Opera, Kvapil, Hilary in Drama, and Mach in ballet for example. These chapters are accompanied by the photographs of great personalities and national artists in addition to biographical data and overviews of the major roles. The figurative part of this section of the book is focused on productions from 1945 to 1977, including both older and contemporary works of Czech, Russian and Soviet origin as well as world classics and modern works of other origins. The final chapter is dedicated to set design, which in the National Theater was always connected with the names of leading Czechoslovak painters, beginning with the Alsea. The National Theater early on set itself apart from all the major world theaters in the world by its purposeful use of modern concepts in set design. This artistic vision continually developed and achieved an international reputation for the theater's set design and it is today acknowledged as a world leader in the art of modern set design. At the back of the book is a detailed summary of the complete text of the book in Russian, German and French. Knihu doplnují podrobná resumé v jazyce ruském, nemeckém a francouzském. 9.5"x10.9", obsah (contents), 287 stránky (pages), Spokojenost zarucena (satisfaction guaranteed.. Hard Cover.
