About This Item

New York: William Wood and Co, 1877. First Edition. Pamphlet. Very good. Gillette reports the results of studies into the effects of morphine on the newborn infant when given to the mother during the second stage of labor. Gillette discusses his own case studies as well as the research results of studies conducted by others. He concludes that, when given in doses that control the mother's pain, morphine is life threatening to the newborn infant."-Wood Library and Museum of Anesthesiology.

Gillette was a physician in New York and a one-time vice-president of the Mutual Life Insurance Company. Not that it's relevant to this pamphlet, but he was convicted of perjury in an insurance scandal. The conviction was overturned on appeal.

Reprinted from The American Journal of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children, vol. X, no. IV, October 1877.

13 pages. First edition of this offprint. A very good copy in the original wrappers, with a small book number on a paper label and the word "Compliments" written over the author's name. Minor loss to the corners.
