About This Item

New York:: Alfred A. Knopf,, 1997.. SIGNED -. Fine in glossy illustrated wrappers (new.). Large format trade paperback issue. Herron's award-winning first book for children, and one which has caused a lot of continuing controversy . A charming story with vibrant cheerful illustrations by Joe Cepeda, this is based on her own experiences with her hair. Written in the traditional African American folk format of call and response, it is a story which can be read on many levels. It is a modern adaptation of the praise-songs of the African griots, includes a bit of a blues song "hidden" in the book (as the author describes it to children) and the untamable "nappy" hair of the little girl can be taken as both a symbol of the unquenchable spirit of Brenda, and of the strength of the African Americans who survived slavery. SIGNED on the title page by illustrator Joe Cepeda.
