About This Item

London and Edinburgh: Fleming H. Revell Company, 1919. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. Pp. 326. Frontis. photo with tissue guard. One plate. Map. Glossary. Index. Bound in green ribbed cloth with publisher's logo stamped in blind on front board, gilt lettering on spine. A touch of light wear to cloth; corners sharp, spine bright. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "With kind regards from [signed] Herbert H. Gowen / 1919" Born in Yarmouth, in the 1880s Gowen landed in Honolulu where he founded a Chinese mission school. Among his students was Sun Yat Sen. A deacon, Gowen later traveled to British Columbia, filling clerical positions, before establishing, in 1909, the University of Washington's Department of Oriental Subjects. Eventually known as the Far East Institute, Gowen's modest enterprise is now the Jackson School of International Studies.

A generalist, Gowen wrote on pan-Asian subjects and occasionally veered into tangential matters, as this book suggests. Dedicated to the Grand Old Man of the University of Washington, Edmond S. Meany. A bright copy.
