About This Item

Franklin Square, New York: Harper & Brothers, 1863. 1st Edition. Copyright date 1863, first American edition, first illustrated edition. Illustrated throughout by John Mclenan. About 3" split at lower spine edge, edges rubbed. Elaborate blind-stamped border and scrollwork H&B design on both boards. Foxing throughout the text. Tall 8vo brownish-black cloth, 278 pps, with two pages of Harper's Library of Select Novels advertisements after text. Text in double columns. There seems to be some confusion as to the which edition constitutes the first American edition of "No Name." Parrish gives Boston: Gardner A. Fuller, 1863 in two volumes as the first but does not supply any supporting evidence. The Fuller edition was an unauthorized one (Fuller also published an unauthorized edition of Great Expectations in 1862) . Parrish notes that despite the statement on The Fuller edition "entered according to Act of.1863 District of Massachusetts" there is no trace of such a record. The Harper edition was authorized as Collins was paid by Harper s for the rights to serialize, presumably simultaneously with the English edition which finished serialization in January 1863. Parrish p.47 ["Wilkie Collins and Charles Reade: First Editions described with Notes by M L Parrish with the assistance of Elizabeth V Miller"]. 1st American Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. Illus. by McLenan, John. Book.

Synopsis

No Name is a 19th-century novel by the master of sensation fiction, Wilkie Collins. A country gentleman is killed in an accident and his wife dies shortly after him. The blow is double for their daughters, who discover that they were born before their parents were married. Their sudden illegitimacy robs them of their inheritance and their accustomed place in society.
