The Reprint Society, London, 1947. Book Club Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Poor. Illustrator: Edward Ardizzone. preface by author. Green coloured boards with maroon insert to the backstrip, within maroon insert gilt coloured titles. Red coloured tint to the top text block edge. The text is illustrated with numerous full-page, half page and quarter page illustrations by Edward Ardizzone. Illustrated dustwrapper, again by Edward Ardizzone, against a beige coloured background with green coloured titles to the front panel. A series of 14 short stories starring Uncle Silas. Rubbing to the backstrip corners and to the book corners. Faint staining to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel and back panel. Fading to the top edge of the book. Browning and foxing with some staining to the text block edges. Browning and staining to the endpapers and browning to the internal text. Gift inscription to the top edge of the free front end paper. This dustwrapper is showing its age. Heavy chipping to the dustwrapper corners and backstrip edges. Numerous tears and creasing of the top dustwrapper edge and rubbing to the lower dustwrapper edge. Staining to the lower corners of the dustwrapper and lower backstrip edge. Heavy browning of the backstrip and browning and foxing to the dustwrapper panels. Some holes to the rear of fold over crease. "This book is a " extra" choice and one of a limited edition" -- from the front fold over blurb, from the reprint society. Size: 12mo (standard paperback). Synopsis

H.E. Bates was born in Northamptonshire in 1905. He published his first novel, The Two Sisters , when he was twenty. His most popular creation was the effervescent Larkin family about whom he wrote five novels including The Darling Buds of May . In 1973 he was awarded the CBE. He died in 1974.
