About This Item
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1926. Cloth. Near Fine. A fascinating Association copy: CURIOUSLY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO THE DUTCH PALEOANTHROPOLOGIST AND GEOLOGIST EUGENE DUBOIS (1858-1940), WHO "earned worldwide fame for his discovery of Pithecanthropus erectus, or 'Java Man'. Although hominid fossils had been found and studied before, Dubois was the first anthropologist to embark upon a purposeful search for them". Vilhjalmur Stefansson inscribes this copy as follows: "DEAR DUBOIS: I HOPE THIS BOOK PREPARES YOU FOR PLAYING ESKIMO IN THE METABOLISM WARD OF BELLEVUE -- AND THAT YOU ENJOY IT IN NEW YORK AS MUCH AS I USED TO UP NORTH -- (SIGNED) JANUARY 12 1928". A solid copy to boot of this June 1926 reprint. Clean, solid and Near Fine in its navy-blue cloth, with bright gilt-titling along the front panel and spine. Thick octavo, Forewords by Henry Fairfield Osborn and Reginald Walter Brock. The 2 fold-out maps (as called for) at the rear.
